State Senator Jen Kiggans is running for Virginia’s Second Congressional District. A former Navy pilot, and a practicing board-certified geriatric nurse, Kiggans has focused on improving healthcare access for Virginia’s senior citizens and veterans.
Kiggans is a proven winner. In 2019, she won an underdog primary campaign before going on to beat a well-funded Democratic opponent. Joe Biden would go on to win the district by ten percentage points the following November.
Congresswoman Elaine Luria defeated Congressman Scott Taylor by 3% in 2018 and by 6% in a 2020 rematch. She has voted 98% with Biden’s position 98% of the time. After redistricting, the second district remains home to Virginia Beach, several military bases, and the Eastern Shore. The new lines have made the district marginally more Republican: though Biden won by 2% in 2020, Glenn Youngkin carried the district by 10% last year.
Furthermore, Senator Kiggans is outraising her opponents in the primary election having raised $122,786 with $206,888 cash on hand compared to second place rival’s $111,764 and $24,839 cash on hand in the last fundraising quarter in October. Kiggans has also received House Minority Leader Keving McCarthy’s endorsement, securing funds from the leadership-aligned Congressional Leadership Fund (CLF).
